Description

Overview

The Type 710BP Precision Back Pressure Regulator is a high-flow, highly accurate pneumatic relief valve with an adjustable pressure setpoint. Its primary function is to protect the downstream portion of a pneumatic system from excessive pressure buildup by relieving air when upstream pressure rises above the selected setting.  These Type 710BP can also be used to control flow.

A sensitive rolling diaphragm enables the Type 710BP to respond to small upstream pressure changes and vent excess pressure to atmosphere. A Venturi-type velocity-pressure tube provides compensating flow control by adjusting the main control valve opening as flow from the controlled system changes.

With relief flow capacity up to 50 scfm, seven available pressure ranges, multiple port sizes, and on-line serviceability, the Type 710BP is well suited for compressor control, instrument supply lines, and pneumatic systems that require precise overpressure protection.

Key Features

  • Highly accurate pneumatic back pressure regulation
  • Adjustable pressure setpoint
  • Protects downstream pneumatic systems from overpressurization
  • High relief flow capacity up to 50 scfm (1,415 Nl/min)
  • Sensitive rolling diaphragm provides quick response
  • Responds to small upstream pressure changes
  • Compensating Venturi-type flow control
  • Stable operation as relief flow changes
  • Maximum system pressure of 250 psig (17.25 bar)
  • Available in 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2″ NPT/BSP port sizes
  • Seven available setpoint pressure ranges
  • Pipe, panel, or bracket mounting
  • On-line maintenance without removing the unit from the air line
  • Tapped exhaust option for captured venting
  • ATEX and EAC TR CU certification options available

Performance Characteristics

  • Flow Capacity: Up to 50 scfm (1,415 Nl/min), depending on setpoint pressure and port size
  • Maximum System Pressure: 250 psig (17.25 bar)
  • Pressure Ranges: 0-2 psig, 0-10 psig, 0-15 psig, 0-30 psig, 0-60 psig, 0-100 psig, and 0-150 psig
  • Port Sizes: 1/4″, 3/8″, or 1/2″ NPT/BSP
  • Mounting: Pipe, panel, or bracket
  • Ambient Temperature Range: 0°F to 150°F (-18°C to 66°C)
  • Weight: 1.5 lb (0.68 kg)
  • Body Material: Die-cast aluminum alloy with baked enamel finish
  • Trim Materials: Acetal, brass, and plated steel
  • Adjustment Knob Material: Phenolic plastic

Flow performance depends on the selected setpoint, pressure range, port size, and allowable pressure rise above the setpoint. For example, a 0-60 psig unit set at 30 psig can relieve approximately 28 scfm with an 8 psig rise above the setpoint when exhausting to atmosphere.

How to Select the Right Configuration

Selecting the correct Type 710BP configuration depends on the required setpoint range, relief flow, connection size, exhaust arrangement, mounting method, and certification requirements.

  • Select the pressure range that places the desired setpoint comfortably within the regulator’s adjustment range.
  • Choose the 0-2 psig range for very low-pressure pneumatic protection.
  • Choose the 0-10 psig or 0-15 psig range for sensitive instrument and pilot systems.
  • Choose the 0-30 psig or 0-60 psig range for general pneumatic and compressor-control applications.
  • Choose the 0-100 psig or 0-150 psig range for higher-pressure systems.
  • Select 1/4″ porting for lower-flow or compact installations.
  • Select 3/8″ or 1/2″ porting when greater relief flow is required.
  • Review the flow characteristic curves to confirm relief capacity at the required setpoint and allowable pressure rise.
  • Select the tapped exhaust option when relieved air must be captured or routed away from the regulator.
  • Choose the tamper-proof cover when casual pressure adjustment must be prevented.
  • Select the stainless steel adjustment screw or stainless steel knob stem for greater corrosion resistance.
  • Choose ATEX or EAC TR CU certification when required by the installation.
  • Add the mounting bracket when side mounting is preferred.

Applications

The Type 710BP is used in place of a conventional relief valve when precise pressure control, high relief flow, and quick response are required.

  • Compressor pressure control systems
  • Protection of instrument air supply lines
  • Pneumatic systems with sensitive downstream equipment
  • Overpressure protection for control devices
  • Bleed and bypass pressure-control circuits
  • Diaphragm-operated inlet restricting valve systems
  • Industrial process control systems
  • Test stands and pneumatic test equipment
  • OEM compressor packages
  • General pneumatic relief applications
  • Flow Control

In a typical compressor-control application, the Type 710BP begins relieving when system pressure reaches its setpoint. The relief pressure is routed to an inlet-restricting valve, causing the valve to close while excess pressure vents through a bleed orifice.

FAQs

What is the Type 710BP back pressure regulator used for?

The Type 710BP protects pneumatic systems from excessive pressure buildup by relieving air when upstream pressure rises above its adjustable setpoint.

How is a back pressure regulator different from a pressure regulator?

A standard pressure regulator controls pressure downstream of the regulator. The Type 710BP controls pressure upstream by opening and relieving excess pressure when the system exceeds the selected setpoint.

What is the maximum relief flow capacity?

The Type 710BP can relieve up to 50 scfm (1,415 Nl/min), depending on the selected setpoint pressure and port size.

What pressure ranges are available?

The Type 710BP is available in seven ranges: 0-2 psig, 0-10 psig, 0-15 psig, 0-30 psig, 0-60 psig, 0-100 psig, and 0-150 psig.

What is the maximum system pressure?

The maximum system pressure is 250 psig (17.25 bar).

Can the Type 710BP exhaust be captured?

Yes. The tapped exhaust option provides a 1/4″ NPT connection that allows relieved air to be captured and routed away from the regulator.

Can the Type 710BP be serviced without removing it from the air line?

Yes. The regulator is designed for on-line maintenance and can be disassembled and serviced without being removed from the air line.

What port sizes are available?

The Type 710BP is available with 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2″ NPT/BSP port sizes.
