Description

Overview

The Type 6100 High Flow Capacity Volume Booster is a 1:1 signal-to-output relay designed for pneumatic applications requiring high forward flow and exhaust capacity. Typically installed between a valve positioner and actuator, the Type 6100 increases the throttling speed of large-volume control valve actuators and is suitable for both diaphragm and piston actuators.

A fixed deadband and integral adjustable bypass valve work together to provide stable, responsive actuator control. Small incremental signal changes can pass through the bypass without opening the main booster valve, while larger signal changes activate the booster to provide the high airflow required for rapid actuator stroking. The bypass can be adjusted to tune dynamic response across a wide range of actuator sizes.

Constructed with a rugged aluminum housing, the Type 6100 combines high flow capacity, soft-seat shutoff, multiple port sizes, broad temperature capabilities, and optional negative bias. It is also IEC 61508 SIL3 certified for use in demanding process control and safety-related applications.

Applications

The Type 6100 High Flow Capacity Volume Booster is designed for pneumatic valve control applications requiring faster actuator response and increased forward and exhaust airflow.

  • Pneumatic control valves
  • Large-volume valve actuators
  • Diaphragm actuators
  • Piston actuators
  • Valve positioner and actuator systems
  • Fast-stroking control valves
  • Throttling control applications
  • Process control systems
  • Industrial automation systems
  • High-flow pneumatic systems
  • Safety-related valve control systems
  • Applications requiring negative bias to zero I/P transducers

Principle of Operation

The Type 6100 operates as a 1:1 pneumatic relay between the control signal and actuator. Signal pressure acts on the booster diaphragm assembly, causing the main supply or exhaust valve to respond when the pressure difference exceeds the unit’s fixed deadband.

The integral adjustable bypass allows small signal changes to reach the actuator without opening the primary booster valve. When a larger pressure differential occurs, the main valve opens to rapidly supply or exhaust air from the actuator. Adjusting the bypass allows the dynamic response of the booster and actuator system to be tuned for stable operation. The principle-of-operation diagram on page 2 identifies the supply, signal, atmosphere, and output flow paths through the booster.
