We have another blog regarding precision regulators and when to use them. Buffering applications from large-scale pressure changes is probably the number one reason to use a precision regulator. Here is a list of tips to help achieve stable downstream pressure:
Regulator Selection: Choose a high-quality regulator that is appropriate for your application. There is truth in paying up for a quality regulator. Know the difference between precision and general-purpose regulator performance.
Proper Sizing: Ensure that the regulator is properly sized for your application. Undersized regulators may struggle to maintain stable pressure, especially if there are sudden changes in demand. When flow gets choked off by small internal valving, the output pressure will vary dramatically.
Inlet Pressure: Maintain a relatively constant and consistent inlet pressure to the regulator. Make sure the flow rate from your source is greater than your application. Fluctuations in inlet pressure can directly affect the downstream pressure, especially with general-purpose regulators. Precision regulators will help buffer upstream pressure changes from your downstream application.
Internal Relief Valve: An internal relief valve is critical for applications that may build downstream pressure. It will be important to pay attention to the relief capacity for a regulator. Many regulators have a large discrepancy between forward and relief flow capacities.
Regular Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance on your regulator. Inspect and clean components as needed and replace worn-out parts promptly.
Monitor and Adjust: Use pressure gauges and monitoring equipment to keep track of the downstream pressure. If you notice significant fluctuations, investigate, and make necessary adjustments.
Remember that achieving perfect stability in all situations might not be possible due to factors beyond your control, but by implementing these steps, you can certainly minimize downstream pressure changes and ensure more consistent operation of your regulator.
